Chainmail Gorget|Butted Steel Neck Armor
What is butted chainmail?
Butted rings are usually round pieces (other shapes are available too) of wire used predominately in modern chain mail construction. The term butted refers to the way the two ends of the ring butt up against one another when the ring is closed.
What is neck armor called?
A gorget is a special piece of armor that protects a soldier’s neck. Medieval suits of armor commonly included a circular gorget that fit under the metal breastplate.
This mail standard, sometimes referred to by modern enthusiasts as a “chainmail gorget”, was created with historical inspiration in mind. Commonly dated in the XV century, this excellent little piece of armor is a great addition to almost any kit and can be used in a variety of creative ways to add the finishing touch to a variety of costume styles. Constructed using the common 4:1 ring pattern, the rings of this mail standard are made from stainless steel, meaning you can fight hard and dance in the rain without any fear of your armor rusting. A tighter weave of 6:1 is used on the actual neck part of the standard, allowing extra protection, and bringing it closer to what would have been used in the XV century, as most historical examples also have the same pattern. For the sake of comfort, the inside of this standard is lined with linen around the neck, to prevent the mail rings from rubbing against your bare skin where your gambeson or underclothes do not cover. To make it extra fancy, we have also added a band of leather with beautiful, scalloped edges, which truly makes this piece worthy of a knight. Leather thonging at the back of the standard allows it to lace up for the best fit, and the whole thing is held together with a robust leather strap stitched on and a medieval buckle.
Note: Care Instructions – This chainmail has a natural finish. The rings do not have a separate coating applied to the steel but are typically lightly blackened with heat to medium gray color. This helps with corrosion issues, but it is recommended that mail with this finish be thoroughly coated with a silicon or rust-preventative spray, such as WD-40, when not in use and stored in a ventilated plastic tub in a warm, dry location. Leather collar with adjustable leather straps and brass buckles. The rings are round butted blackened mild steel that is 10mm and 16 gauge. Medieval Chainmail Armor is a must-have for medieval lovers.
